Grief & Loss
“The reality is that you will grieve forever. You will not ‘get over’ the loss of a loved one; you will learn to live with it. You will heal and you will rebuild yourself around the loss you have suffered. You will be whole again but you will never be the same. Nor should you be the same nor would you want to.”
― Elisabeth Kübler-Ross
When we experience a loss- whether it is the death of a loved one, a beloved pet or the end of a relationship- we go through something profound and are changed by it. There is a period of time where by necessity we pull away from the outside world, turn inward, and must allow the waves of grief to ride over and through.
Grief is a process that requires deep attention to what hurts, as your life and heart reorient and find a new rhythm after the loss. You will find your footing again, and over time begin to come back to yourself, and at the same time you will be changed, as you have gone through something meaningful and life-altering.
Oftentimes during grief, there can be some unhelpful messages pushing you to "get over it" faster than you feel you are ready for. Sometimes this is by external pressures such as work or family obligations, however the feelings of grief can be so complex and varied-often contradictory or confusing feelings arise-that it can become overwhelming and get pushed away.
Therapy can be a helpful and supportive place to express and move through all of the complicated feelings that arise during this tender time. It is a period that requires immense support, room for the full range of experience and gentle acceptance of yourself and whatever you may need. Regardless if you are grieving a loss that happened last week or many years ago, this is an important process which will allow you to move-on by moving-through, to come back to yourself.
